Autographed Pucks: A Hidden Gem in Hockey Memorabilia

Hockey memorabilia tends to be something that hockey fans like to collect to treasure down the road. Considering that around 1.1 million people watch regular season games, there could end up being some competition for this NHL memorabilia.

One of the pieces of autographed hockey memorabilia that tends to have the largest demand is autographed hockey pucks.

Why do people want signed pucks so badly? What autographed hockey pucks make the best hockey puck collectible?

This guide answers those questions and more.

Changing Hockey Pucks

One thing that a collector may be looking for is a unique hockey puck design for their hockey puck collection. Now and then, the NHL decides to change the hockey puck design to keep things fresh.

For example, in the 2019-20 season, the NHL decided to change the design of their hockey pucks. They stated that they like to freshen up the graphics once in a while.

As a result, people who collect autographed hockey memorabilia may suddenly create demand for these new hockey pucks.

This is not just the case with new hockey puck designs. Some collectors may try to take this a step further and collect as many different hockey puck designs as possible.

Collecting all of those hockey pucks can allow a collector to represent several different eras of the NHL. It can also create more demand for hockey pucks that were not used that often.

For example, let's say that the NHL wanted to have a certain hockey puck design for the 2004-05 season. Hockey fans know that there was a lockout that whole season so nobody ever played. However, if anything were to come out about collectibles being available from that season, collectors would likely do a lot to try to add that to their hockey puck collection.

The Players

Another thing you need to keep in mind with signed pucks is who is signing them. The reason for this is that there are players who are going to be much more famous than other players. As a result, their hockey memorabilia will likely drive more demand in the open market.

Something else you have to keep in mind with individual players is how often they actually sign hockey pucks. If you have a player who rarely signs an autograph, then having signed pucks from him could make quite a hockey puck collectible.

Collectors are likely to keep these two factors in mind more than almost anything else when it comes to this type of NHL memorabilia.

So, let's say that someone is looking for NHL memorabilia from Martin Brodeur. Well, considering he is in the conversation as one of the greatest goalies in the history of the sport, his autograph may drive a little more demand.

Then, there are famous skaters such as Vladimir Tarasenko. Considering how much he has made his mark with the St. Louis Blues and the NHL overall, someone would likely pay a decent amount of money for an autographed puck from him.

Think about this carefully when considering what hockey memorabilia to get.

Circumstances

Something else that you need to keep in mind with autographed hockey pucks is what kind of circumstances are attached to these pucks. In other words, were these pucks from a special milestone, a big game, or a certain event?

Let's use a Stanley Cup Final as an example. This championship series is the pinnacle of the sport and where history is made. So, if you get autographed hockey pucks from players on the winning team, these pucks are likely to demand a lot of value.

However, it does not have to be a puck that was used in the Final. It can be from a special individual milestone as well. These things can include someone's first career goal, a goalie's first career win, a puck used to break a season or career record, and more.

Then, there are hockey pucks that come from special events. One of these events is the NHL Draft. This could be your best option if you are looking for a hockey puck collectible that represents when the player first entered the league. An example could be if you wanted something from Tarasenko, you could look for an autographed hockey puck from the 2010 NHL Draft.

On top of this, you have other yearly events like the NHL All-Star Game. For those of you who have a hockey puck collection and other hockey memorabilia from All-Star Games, this may be your best bet.

Think of what you want and where it might come from before you start looking for memorabilia.

Group Collections

Finally, there may be some collectors out there who collect multiple hockey pucks to put them all as part of a group collection. Certain players or events can fit together very well to make the entire group of pucks more valuable for a collector.

For example, let's say that a collector is trying to get every team's NHL puck logo from the 2019-20 season. Once they can collect every single team's puck, the entire collection would be worth more money.

Another example could be trying to get autographs from the entire first line of a Stanley Cup Final team. If all five players from that line had their autographs on one puck and that team ended up winning it all, it would likely be worth a lot more money.

The same goes for an All-Star Game. Someone may try to find a puck with multiple autographs from All-Stars in one year or try to collect pucks from as many different All-Star Games as possible.

Get Autographed Hockey Pucks

These are some of the ways that collectors may determine the value of autographed hockey pucks.

You have to think of reasons why these hockey pucks may be valuable. Some of these reasons include special hockey events, teams that made the Stanley Cup Final, famous players, unique circumstances, rare collectibles, and more.
